Preface 前言

The dog is one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animal mascots. There goes a Chinese folk proverb, “dogs bring wealth”. Dogs are people’s friends and Chinese people usually call them “wangcai” 。The dogs barking always sounded like the pronunciation a Chinese character “wang”, whose meaning is equivalent to the English word “bowwow”. Linked to another character “cai”,which means the indication of prosperity, Chinese have developed a tradition of calling the pets dogs in a humanized name “wangcai”, hoping that dogs can bring wealth, social statues and fortune to their families. The name Wangcai conveys the wish of wellbeing, and is really easy to remember.

As the dogs were evolution from the wolves, the species of dogs formed around 16,000 years ago. They lost some of the wild nature, and turned to be docile and obedient. Humans and dogs have lived together for generations and developed a very close relationship. Dogs’ acute sense of smell and hearing, as well as the excellence of capturing, the remarkableness of endurance running speed, made them become a highly competent hunting assistant. Besides, when humans settled down, dogs began to act an important role in guarding shelters and properties of humans. It is undoubtedly that they are good helpers of human beings. Meanwhile, dogs could understand human emotions and respond to people’s body language. They can read our face of joy, anger or sorrow. As a result, the mutualistic relationship between human and dogs comes from their accompany and their owner’s trust. It is said that the devil-killing pet god who kept Er-Lang god company was the dog Xiaotian, depicted as China Canines. There are uncounted legends and myths, revealing dogs’ loyalty and brightness, known in either ancient or modern times.

There was an ancient Chinese poem depicting the scene that a latecomer backed home at a dark snowy night hearing the dog barking in front of the door. The dog barking reflected the excitement of hearing its owner groped the way to a wooden door. Backing home with a warm fireplace to warm the family, having a lovely dog as a guide, raising cups with friends, how pleasure these scenes are of returned person in this poem.

The paintings which portrayed Chinese zodiac animal dogs exhibited in this exhibition, pass on the significance of wellbeing and prosperity of the past year. Fulfilled and understanding all, we are truly content that we lived a full life, and Imaging the guiding wangcai dog smells the coming rightness of our own choice for the future.
